Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization provides a system to reintroduce you and your children to a vital but often neglected source of powerful and sophisticated linguistic patterning available to children: memorized language, especially memorized poetry.

This teaching tool includes a book with over 75 complete poems, plus speech and soliloquy recommendations. Instructions, memory charts, certificates, and poet biographies are included.

Given the linguistic and cultural benefits of memorizing poetry, this resource may be one of the best uses of your available school hours. Recitation of memorized poems can easily be done away from a desk—perhaps in the car, while cooking or folding clothes, or during a walk. Memorizing new poems gets easier in direct proportion to the number of poems already learned; in other words, the more you have learned, the faster you can learn more.

Be sure to read the introduction to this book frequently to be reminded of the importance of poetry memorization for the linguistic development of children. "Memorization is not only natural for young children, it is culturally powerful and educationally essential."

I use the Poetry Memorization book without the CDs. I have my son read the new poem aloud several times, we discuss some of the stylistic techniques that stand out to us, and then he works on memorizing a few stanzas. We then go back over the poems he has already memorized. He's far enough along now that he recites every other poem every other day. The methodology behind the program works brilliantly! Plus the selected poems include a great mixture of classically beautiful pieces that I wanted my son to be familiar with, as well as whimsical and entertaining pieces that my son (10yrs) thinks are really funny. -Vicki
